Sports car insurance guide

Storing a sports car for winter:
prepare the dormant season properly.

Seasonal registration, secure parking, vehicle care and insurance: what to clarify before a long standstill in Germany.

More than parking the car

Winter storage
starts with a plan.

Sports cars, hypercars, exotics and classics are often used seasonally. Several months off the road affect more than the battery and tyres. Registration, parking location, security, vehicle value and the agreed insurance cover must also work together.

This guide supports the preparation process. It does not replace the manufacturer's model-specific instructions or a review of the individual insurance contract.

Five steps

Prepare systematically
before the final drive.

01

Check the operating period in advance

For a German seasonal registration plate, the period shown on the plate is binding. It covers full months and must be at least two and no more than eleven months. Outside that period, the vehicle must not be driven or parked on public roads.

02

Confirm the storage location and access

The parking space should be dry, secure and separated from public traffic. The regular parking location stated in the insurance contract must reflect the actual situation. Discuss changes with the personal adviser before storage.

03

Prepare the vehicle to manufacturer guidance

Cleaning, a suitable battery maintainer, tyre protection and a breathable cover may be useful during a long standstill. The manufacturer or a qualified specialist should confirm which measures are appropriate for the particular model.

04

Document condition and value

Current photographs, mileage, VIN, key inventory, optional equipment and valuation evidence make later assessment easier. New modifications or a material change in value should be discussed before a claim ever occurs.

05

Verify the exact insurance scope

Whether and to what extent cover continues during the dormant period depends on the individual contract and its terms. Review comprehensive cover, parking requirements, excess, vehicle value and any policyholder duties.

German seasonal plates

The operating period
is legally binding.

Under section 10 of the German Vehicle Registration Ordinance, a seasonal registration plate can cover two to eleven complete months. Outside the stated period, the car may neither be driven nor parked on public roads.

The vehicle therefore needs suitable private storage for the dormant period. Anyone wishing to change the season or move the car outside it should clarify the registration requirements with the competent German registration authority beforehand.

Insurance during storage

Do not assume
the dormant cover.

A seasonal policy may provide limited cover outside the operating period. The risks covered and the conditions concerning storage, registration and policy duration are determined solely by the individual policy schedule and agreed terms.

Before storage, verify whether risks such as theft, fire or natural hazards are covered and which excess applies. Comprehensive cover during the driving season does not automatically mean that every loss during the dormant period is insured.

Vehicle care

Manufacturer guidance
comes before rules of thumb.

For longer winter storage, Porsche recommends measures including thorough cleaning, tyre protection, a suitable battery charger and a breathable cover. These are useful pointers, but they must suit the model, tyres, battery and storage environment.

Model-specific operating and maintenance guidance is especially important for hybrid or electric cars, special starter batteries, carbon-ceramic brakes or centre-lock wheels. An authorised or otherwise qualified specialist can advise where necessary.

Checklist

Review everything once
before winter storage.

  1. 01check the seasonal period on the plate and registration documents
  2. 02select private storage that is separated from the public road
  3. 03compare the location and security measures with the insurance information
  4. 04clean the vehicle and allow it to dry thoroughly
  5. 05plan battery care, tyre protection and a cover in line with manufacturer guidance
  6. 06photograph mileage, condition, keys and equipment
  7. 07review valuation documents, invoices and modifications
  8. 08confirm the dormant-period cover in the quotation or policy terms

Returning to the road

Do not simply drive away
when spring arrives.

Before the first drive, check the operating period, roadworthiness inspection, tyre pressures, fluid levels, lights, brakes and warning messages. The exact checks required after a long standstill depend on the vehicle and manufacturer guidance.

The insurance contract also deserves a quick review: are the vehicle value, authorised drivers, annual mileage, season, modifications and regular parking location still accurate? Changes are better addressed before the first drive than after a claim.

Conclusion

Good preparation protects
the car and clarity.

A well-planned dormant season combines lawful private storage, suitable vehicle care, current documentation and a reviewed insurance contract. This prevents technical and insurance questions from remaining open until the season begins.
